Treating Injuries

The Work of a Physiotherapist: Treating Injuries

When you think about injuries of your body, there are a few distinctions you need to make:

There are many different types of injuries a physiotherapist can help you with e.g. fractures, joint injuries, muscle injuries, tendon injuries and ligament injuries, to name just a few.

There are also many different parts of your body that can become injured; for example your feet, hands, back, and neck.

Acute injuries differ from overuse injuries and repetitive strain injuries. In sport most injuries will (for example) fall into acute injuries where a once-off trauma causes damage to the tissues. Overuse injuries occur over time with repeated microtrauma causing injury to muscle, tendons, bones, ligaments or joints. Poor technique or a build up in training that is too quick or too demanding can cause an overuse injury, for example shin splints.

Even though injuries can be differentiated in this way, the process of injury and the process of repair (healing) are for the large part exactly the same irrespective of where or what was injured. It is the knowledge of these processes that empower the physiotherapist to facilitate effective pain relief, healing and rehabilitation. And the treatment techniques she uses are extremely effective at repairing these injuries quickly and efficiently.

Your physiotherapist’s knowledge and experience will help you work through the various stages of recovery from an injury. She will also give you effective training exercises to strengthen the injured parts and prevent future injuries. The benefits of the training exercises (physical activity) far outweigh the problem of having pain. The quicker you start training, the better your chance to have of a full recovery instead of a chronic underlying condition that prevents you from returning to you desired level of activity.
